Procedure reading

Students need to be aware of different types of text. There are different things to consider when reading non fiction texts, recipes and procedures verses reading a narrative. We are talking about directionality, numbering in text and the use of pictures. This past week, during our shared reading we introduced procedure reading to the students. We displayed How to make a cat and each day we reread the instructions and tasked about the materials needed and steps. Some students immediately incorporated this knowledge into their work at the art Center and created heart shaped cats. A few students went home and created their own heart creations. On Friday we read a procedure on making a frog from heart shapes. All of the students were invited to follow the procedure. We learned a lot about students understanding of the terms behind, in front of, half and upside down. At home you can point out instructions in a game, recipes and other procedures that you may follow in your home.
