As you may recall, our students created shoes for the dolls in our home center. Miss Sita and I learned a lot about the skills the students needed in order to move forward. We saw they needed more sewing instruction, weaving practice and more work with fasteners. In small groups we have been working with students on weaving activities. We have experimented with different and more efficient fasteners such as safety pins, velcro, tape, glue and thread. The students have learned a little bit about the differences between 2 D and 3 D. Today we provided a new challenge to see if they could put their new skills to work. We discussed the weather and the types of clothing we are now wearing outdoors. We talked about the types of clothes we have for our babies in the home center. The students decided we needed hats, mittens, scarves, neck warmers and coats for the dolls. Creation began and we were able to observe the wonderful new skills being used in the design and making of the items. Here are some photos of the process. The final products are very cute, but the designing and thinking involved was the key part that we were observing today.
What can you make with your child at home?
