Many students have indicated that they have some type of iOS device such as an iPhone, an iPod or an iPad at home. If you have one of these devices and you would like to use it as tool to reinforce learning at home, here are some suggestions.
Each family needs to consider their own financial situation and download the apps that best match their family needs.
A good review site for apps is http://digital-storytime.com/ Check this site weekly for changes and for deals on apps.
Here are some apps we use in class.
Word Study-letters/words/ names
Purpose: Students will use apps to practice writing their names, letters and words of the week.
Apps: Doodle Buddy, Alphabet Tracing, LittleWriter, Skywrite, Graffiti Draw! Word Wizard, Glow Draw, Alphabet, Words, Typing Bee, Sight Words and Chalk
Photos and Video
Purpose: Students will capture things as they arise in the classroom. For example, puppet plays, block structures, paintings
App: Pic Collage,
Purpose: To practice number concepts, number formations, patterning recognition, patterning creation, manipulate shapes etc.
Apps: AL abacus, Tens Frame, Zoom, Hungry Fish, Felt Fun, Counting Board, Number Rack, Calculator
Purpose: To create stories.
Apps: My Story
Purpose: To retell stories, to create stories or plays, to explain an event.

Open Learning Centers-Play
Purpose: students will have open choice time during the day. During this time, I would like students to collaborate together while using apps. I’ve selected some apps that promote dramatic play and interactions with others.

Purpose: Students can listen and/or read along with stories for enjoyment. This helps build their listening comprehension.

We use the app, Kid’s Journal by Apps of Approval on a daily basis. I’ve set up individual journals for each student. They take photos of their artwork, structures, puppet plays, dramatic play and other learning opportunities. Students could create their own home journal and document events that happen at home. This would encourage writing and reflecting on the day.
